Scene from Little Brother...

More journalists asked questions. Some were sympathetic, some were hostile. When I got tired, I handed my keyboard to Ange and let her be M1k3y for a while. I didn't really feel like M1k3y and me were the same person anymore anyway. M1k3y was the kind of kid who talked to international journalists and inspired a movement. Marcus got suspended from school and fought with his dad and wondered if he was good enough for his kick-ass girlfriend.

Above is a scene from Cory Doctorow's novel, "Little Brother." Marcus, the speaker, is a high school student who desires to resist the government, and essentially, "big brother." He strives to inspire others to resist the overpowering government, and does so with ananoymous online communities under the surname: M13ky. When Marcus is giving a press conference online, he asks his girlfriend, Ange to take over the typing. He expresses his diassociation with his avatar, M1k3y. Throughout the novel, Marcus gets more and more carried away with his virtual identity, and realizes that they are not the same person. This is the danger that can present users of Second Life. Perhaps it is not a refuge, as many argue, Marcus certainly did not find refuge at the end, in M1k3y.

Below is the Machinima Movie project that our group completed with inspiration from Doctorow's "Little Brother." Featured characters are Marcus and Ange, as discussed above. Enjoy!
